Shipsurance is a discount shipping insurance provider that is integrated into ShipEngine. Shipsurance is included with every ShipEngine account, so you don't need to sign up for a Shipsurance account to have coverage.
As a ShipEngine user, you have access to additional insurance through Shipsurance for only 1% of your shipment value. Learn more about the benefits of third-party shipping insurance.
Make sure you have added billing information to your ShipEngine account. You must be in Production to use Shipsurance.
To use Shipsurance:
Go to Connections and select Insurance.
Toggle the 3rd-Party Insurance option to on.
Check to confirm that you have reviewed Shipsurance's Terms and Conditions in the pop-up window, then click Save.
Click the Add Funds button to fund your Shipsurance account.
In the Insurance Funding pop-up window, you can complete a One-time Purchase of funds or enable Auto-Funding of your Shipsurance account.
ShipEngine will use the credit card you have on file for your subscription to process payments.
Add Shipsurance as the insurance_provider within the shipment object to add insurance coverage to your shipment.
You can add Shipsurance to shipments as long as you create the label within 48 hours of its ship date.
Certain types of items, like currency or perishables, cannot be insured. Some other products, such as cell phones, televisions, and laptop computers, can only be insured under certain conditions.
Please see the Shipsurance Terms and Conditions for a full list of excluded items, special insurance conditions, and complete details on destination countries that cannot be insured.
If you are shipping via UPS, FedEx, USPS Priority Mail, or USPS Priority Mail Express, you can take advantage of the default coverage that the carriers offer and insure the remaining value of your items through Shipsurance.
For example, if you’re sending a package via UPS Ground with a declared value of $300, enter the full insured_value within the insurance object ($300 in this case) and set Shipsurance as the insurance_provider. The first $100 will be covered by UPS, and the remaining declared value (in this example $200) will be covered by Shipsurance.
Likewise, if you have a package shipping via FedEx Ground at a declared value of $300, enter the full $300 value in the insured_value field and Shipsurance as the insurance_provider. The initial $100 will be covered by FedEx and the rest of the value ($200) will be covered by Shipsurance.
USPS covers $50 for Priority Mail and $100 for Priority Mail Express. Just like the previous examples, include the full amount you wish to be insured in the insured_value field and enter Shipsurance as the insurance_provider. Shipsurance will cover the difference.
